Audio Cable Buying Guides

Microphone Cables

XLR microphone cables are the backbone of any recording studio or live sound setup. Balanced XLR cables use three conductors to reject electromagnetic interference, keeping your signal clean over long runs. For studio work, invest in Mogami or Canare cables — the difference in noise floor is audible. For live sound, Pro Co and Whirlwind offer tour-ready durability. Budget options from Hosa and Behringer work well for rehearsal spaces and home studios.

Key specs to consider: conductor gauge (thicker is better for long runs), shielding type (spiral, braided, or quad), connector quality (Neutrik Gold is the gold standard), and jacket flexibility (important for stage use).

Speaker Cables

Speaker cables carry high-current amplified signals from power amps to loudspeakers. Unlike instrument or microphone cables, speaker cables need thick gauge conductors (12-16 AWG) to handle the current without signal loss. Never substitute microphone or instrument cables for speaker cables — the thin conductors can overheat and degrade your sound.

Speakon connectors are the professional standard for live sound, offering a secure locking connection. For smaller rigs, 1/4" TS speaker cables work fine. Banana plugs are common in hi-fi and studio monitor setups.

Instrument Cables

Guitar and bass instrument cables use unbalanced 1/4" TS connectors to carry your instrument's signal to amps, pedalboards, and recording interfaces. Cable quality matters here — poor shielding introduces hum and buzz, especially with single-coil pickups. Mogami and Monster instrument cables are studio favorites for their silent operation.

Right-angle plugs reduce stress on your guitar's output jack and are essential for tight pedalboard layouts. Keep instrument cable runs under 20 feet when possible to preserve high-frequency detail.

MIDI Cables

MIDI cables transmit digital performance data between synthesizers, drum machines, controllers, and computers. Standard MIDI uses 5-pin DIN connectors. While MIDI is a low-bandwidth digital protocol, quality cables with proper shielding prevent data errors that can cause stuck notes or missed events.

Modern MIDI controllers often use USB or 3.5mm TRS MIDI instead of traditional 5-pin DIN. Check your equipment's manual to confirm which MIDI connection type you need.

Patch Cables

Patch cables connect equipment in signal chains — studio patchbays, effects loops, modular synthesizers, and pedalboards. TRS patch cables provide balanced connections for professional studio routing. Bantam (TT) cables are used in broadcast facilities and high-end studios where space is at a premium.

For guitar pedalboards, use short right-angle patch cables to minimize signal loss and board footprint. For studio patchbays, invest in quality TRS cables — they'll be patched and unpatched thousands of times.

Stage Snakes

Stage snakes consolidate multiple audio channels into a single cable run between the stage and the mixing console. A typical live sound setup uses a 16-channel snake for small venues and 24-32 channels for larger productions. DB25 snakes are essential for studio rack routing, connecting audio interfaces to patchbays and outboard gear.

Digital stage boxes (Dante, AVB) are replacing traditional analog snakes in modern installations, offering hundreds of channels over a single Ethernet cable with lower latency and zero signal degradation.

Digital Audio Cables

Digital audio cables carry signals between converters, interfaces, and digital processors. AES/EBU uses 110-ohm balanced XLR cables for professional applications. S/PDIF uses 75-ohm RCA coaxial cables for consumer and semi-pro gear. TOSLINK optical cables are immune to electromagnetic interference and carry both stereo S/PDIF and 8-channel ADAT signals.

Word clock (BNC) cables synchronize the sample clocks of multiple digital devices — essential for preventing clicks and pops in multi-device digital studios. USB and Thunderbolt cables connect audio interfaces to computers.

Headphone Cables

Replacement and upgrade headphone cables can improve both the sound quality and practicality of your monitoring setup. Premium cables use oxygen-free copper conductors and better shielding for cleaner audio. Extension cables let you move freely in the studio without being tethered to your interface or headphone amp.

In-ear monitor (IEM) cables with 2-pin or MMCX connectors are available for professional stage monitoring. Many studio headphones (Beyerdynamic, Sennheiser, Audio-Technica) support detachable cables for easy replacement.

XLR
3-pin balanced audio connector (male and female). Industry standard for microphones, mixers, and professional audio. Provides excellent noise rejection over long cable runs. Pin 1: Ground, Pin 2: Hot (+), Pin 3: Cold (-).
TRS (1/4")
Tip-Ring-Sleeve quarter-inch connector with three conductors. Used for balanced mono signals (studio patching) or stereo signals (headphones). Identified by two black rings on the plug shaft.
TS (1/4")
Tip-Sleeve quarter-inch connector with two conductors. Used for unbalanced mono signals — guitar cables, speaker cables, and basic patch connections. Has one black ring on the plug.
Speakon
Locking speaker cable connector designed by Neutrik for high-current applications. Available in NL2 (2-pole) and NL4 (4-pole) versions. The professional standard for PA speakers and subwoofers.
RCA
Unbalanced phono connector common in consumer audio, DJ equipment, and home studios. Color-coded: white/black for left channel, red for right channel. Also used for S/PDIF coaxial digital audio.
BNC
Bayonet Neill-Concelman connector used for 75-ohm coaxial connections. In pro audio, BNC is the standard for word clock synchronization cables between digital devices.
MIDI (5-Pin DIN)
5-pin circular connector for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. Carries performance data (not audio) between synths, drum machines, and controllers. Being gradually replaced by USB and TRS MIDI.
USB-A / USB-B
Universal Serial Bus connectors for computer audio. USB-A (flat rectangular) connects to computers; USB-B (square with beveled top) connects to audio interfaces and controllers.
USB-C
Modern reversible USB connector supporting USB 2.0, 3.0, 3.1, and Thunderbolt 3/4. Increasingly common on audio interfaces, laptops, and mobile devices.
Speakon to 1/4"
Hybrid cable connecting Speakon-equipped amplifiers to speaker cabinets with 1/4" inputs, or vice versa. Common in smaller live sound and rehearsal setups.
Bantam / TT
Tiny Telephone (TT) connector used in professional broadcast and studio patchbays. Smaller than standard 1/4" to allow denser patch point configurations.
TOSLINK
Optical digital audio connector carrying light-based signals. Supports stereo S/PDIF and 8-channel ADAT. Completely immune to electromagnetic interference.
DB25
25-pin D-subminiature connector used for multi-channel audio connections. Carries 8 balanced channels per connector. Standard on professional audio interfaces from Avid, Lynx, Apogee, and others.
EtherCON
Neutrik's ruggedized locking RJ45 Ethernet connector designed for professional audio networking (Dante, AVB, AES67). Withstands touring abuse that would destroy standard Ethernet jacks.
Banana Plug
Spring-loaded or expanding plug connector for speaker cables. Connects to binding post terminals on hi-fi amplifiers, receivers, and studio monitors.
3.5mm (1/8")
